Title sequence further re-search

I thought it would be a good idea to look at some other thriller opening in order  to get ideas for our own title sequence and the way the titles should appear. This includes the font they should be in, the placing and the way they actually come on. Of course when choosing which openings to look at I had to take in consideration the story behind the film as well as the sub genres, because they would be no point in me looking at an opening for a horror, thriller when we are doing a psychological thriller. The mood the two try to set is completely different and so the colours, music and movement of the titles would be different too. That is why I chose these films which relate more to our thriller.

The Next Three Days

Intertextuality Shots

We had the film ‘The Stepfather’ as one of our main inspirations, therefore most of the intersexuality in our thriller would be mainly from the stepfather. Bellow are a few examples of different shots that were inspired by the film itself, however we managed to make them our own in one way or another.

This shot in The Stepfather is used as a cutaway, but is part of the mise en scene and reveals a bit of background information that later in the film becomes even more apparent.
In our shot we too have pictures of the main characters, however instead of a cut away the mise en scene is seen at the beginning when he turns the alarm off.

A shot confirming that something is wrong through aside shot of what appears to be a dead woman.

We too interpret this into our thriller, however make it less apparent by not using make up to clarify that she is dead, that way keeping the suspense going as the audience asks themselves is she really dead?

A wide shot of the main actor leaving as he shuts the door behind him.

Over the shoulder shot reflecting off the mirror, which also portrays a sense of normality as he does his morning routine.

Over the shoulder shot in the mirror ones again portraying a sense of normality however with our own he seems to be deep in thought rather than actually doing some sort of activity.

Second day of filming..

Our second day of filming went by much quicker than the first one, because we tried to film as much as possible in our first day that way if we looked over and didn’t like anything and felt the needed to re do it we would have had enough time to do so on the second day of filming. However, at the time we thought everything was fine the way it was and so finished off the final few shots and rapped it up for the day.

However, once we were back in college we realised that a lot of the material we had we had to re shoot again because of technical problems such as the lighting changing from scene to scene, or because we decided to add on a bit of mise on scene such as the picture frame, which meant we had to re shot that whole scene. As a result of which, during one of our Tuesdays 3 hour media lessons instead of going in to college, we went back to our set and re shot the scenes that we needed to do. Because we had previously planned out exactly what we needed to fix or change, it didn’t take us that long and we were able to get back to college on time for our afternoon lessons. Nonetheless if we had spotted the problem before on our second day of filming, we would have never had the need to go back and re film some shots. Still this all gave us a lot more footage to work with and made the editing process a bit easier as we had a lot to choose from.

Editing of some pictures on set

I took different screen grabs from our thriller and decided to play around with them by editing them in photoscape. With some I changed the contrast of the images, added more light less shadow, I also used the saturation curve with some. I did all that to see exactly how much of an impact lighting and adding on different effects have on the over all presentation, because now some of the images look much more eerie and mysteries and that’s exactly what a thriller is all about.

Rough Cut

This is just a rough cut of our thriller, but we still have quite a lot to do before the final dead line.  The good thing about our rough cut is that it tells us what stage we're at and allows us to see that there are many aspects of our thriller opening that we need to improve and add on, such as; the soundtrack, title sequences (length of titles) and the overall length of our film, since it goes over the 2 minute limit.
