The Structure of Openings

There are 3 structure openings which are:
  • A narrative opening with the titles running throughout
  • A discrete title sequence
  • Titles over a blank screen, followed by the narrative opening

In class we got to see a few examples of each opening in order to clearly see and understand the difference and positive and negative sides of each type of opening. For instance, with the titles over a blank screen the audience can focus on each name individually and the title’s themselves are clearer to see compared to narrative openings for instance, where the titles run throughout and so the audience may focus more on what’s happening on the screen rather than the titles themselves, which could be a positive as it grabs their attentions straight away, however a down side to it could be that the actor’s names or the director’s name could go un noticed.

A narrative opening with the titles running throughout - The Shining, He loves me he loves me not, The Stepfather

A discrete title sequence - Seven, Enemy of The State

Titles over a blank screen, followed by the narrative opening - Donnie Darko, Dead Calm

Stylised editing -  Taking of Pelham 123
